Position Summary
The University of Southern Indiana is accepting applications for Outreach Coordinator and Student Mentor.
As part of the Multicultural Center team and under the supervision of the Executive Director develop, coordinate and deliver diversity and social justice based outreach programing, with a strong working relationship with the Counseling Center. Provide one-on-one mentoring/life coaching to students from under-represented groups, with a particular focus on racial and ethnic minorities, and engage in activities designed to help students persist and graduate from the University of Southern Indiana.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Develop, coordinate and deliver educational programs to under-represented groups, with a particular focus on racial and ethnic minorities on topics such as assertiveness, employability, career exploration, personal effectiveness, leadership, money management, personal safety, self-advocacy, self-care, goal setting, stress management, time management, study skills, succeeding in a predominantly white institution, microaggression and stereotype threat.
- Work with faculty, staff and other constituents across campus to develop learning opportunities for students, faculty and staff focused on multiculturalism, diversity and social justice. Collaborate on institutional initiatives focused on understanding, acceptance and celebration of diversity and cultural differences and on initiatives related to fostering an inclusive learning environment at the University of Southern Indiana.
- Assess the effectiveness of programs designed to positively impact racial and ethnic minority students, recommending changes and utilizing best practices to positively impact student success, retention and graduation.
- Assess student needs and provide mentoring/life coaching during scheduled appointments and during drop-in hours. Develop a positive relationship and offer support and guidance to students, assisting with emotional, interpersonal, academic and career success. Establish rapport, build trust and assist students with problem-solving.
- Track student initiatives and mentoring/life coaching activities in a timely manner.
- Work with various offices and constituents across campus to identify and assist racial and ethnic minority students who may be struggling socially, emotionally and/or academically. Utilize the CARE Team and other early alert systems to identify students at risk for early withdrawal and/or academic dismissal from the University.
- Assist students in accessing services across campus, including the Counseling Center, Multicultural Center, Dean of Students Office, Disability Resources, Student Development Programs, Career Services and Internships, Academic Skills, etc.
- Assist in the planning, execution and evaluation of major departmental initiatives within the Multicultural Center.
- Maintain and enhance knowledge, skills and abilities by attending workshops and conferences, and through membership(s) in professional associations.
- Assist with recruiting of students for the University.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree. Preferred disciplines include Counseling or Social Work.
- Professional experience must include two or more years assisting underrepresented populations.
- Strong interpersonal skills, relationship-building skills, and proficiency in oral and written communication.
- Demonstrated ability to connect well with diverse students by providing emotional support, academic assistance and life-skill development.
- Must possess working knowledge of, and the ability to apply, research and theory on microaggression, stereotype threat and other related issues from the professional and scholarly multicultural literature.
- Significant and articulate knowledge of developmental and human diversity issues that impact the emotional, academic and career success of students.
- Significant experience in creating programs and services designed to improve the emotional, interpersonal, academic and career success of students who are racial and ethnic minorities.
- Must possess a demonstrated commitment to increasing people’s understanding, acceptance and celebration of diversity and cultural differences.
- Must be able to apply effective interpersonal communication to establish rapport, build trust and problem-solve while maintaining student privacy.
- Must possess the ability to navigate University processes, procedures and systems to identify students at-risk for early withdrawal and/or academic dismissal and the ability to advocate and provide resources to these students.
- Strong work ethic and a desire to work collaboratively with other University departments.
- Knowledge of and ability to work within federal, state, and University regulations and guidelines.
- Basic computer skills.
Preferred Knowledge and Skills
- Master’s degree.
- Experience in a university or college setting in a helping and advocacy capacity.
Regular Work Hours/Travel Requirements
- Standard office hours are 8am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday.
- Frequent irregular or extended hours, including evenings and weekends, may be necessary to complete departmental deadlines or during special programs and events.
- Occasional travel may be required.
