Job Summary

Harvard Library (HL) Open Scholarship and Research Data Services (OSRDS) seeks an innovative, collaborative, and motivated individual to join its team to support Harvard’s open-access, institutional repository DASH (Digital Access to Scholarship at Harvard). Managed by OSRDS, DASH contains nearly 60,000 works and sees over 5 million+ downloads per year. Reporting to the Senior Repository Manager (SRM), the Digital Repository Coordinator will perform a range of activities focused on growing the scope and reach of DASH, within both the university’s scholarly and global user communities, helping to make academic research produced at Harvard available to anyone, anywhere, for free. 

The Digital Repository Coordinator serves as the front-line representative for OSRDS to help increase the awareness and visibility of DASH within and beyond the University by educating faculty; faculty assistants; graduate and undergraduate students; and library staff about DASH and its benefits through presentations, office hours, one-on-one tutorials, and printed and digital media. The Digital Repository Coordinator will assist Harvard scholars in depositing their scholarship; maintain repository communities and collections; liaise with university user groups, admins, and technical partners to maintain our repository; and continuously improve repository workflow, data quality, and reporting tools. In close partnership with the SRM, the Digital Repository Coordinator will assist with repository migration, collection, and service strategies, including electronic dissertations and theses (ETD) efforts and other repository-based collaborations within OSRDS, HL, and externally.

OSRDS offers and aids the Harvard community by providing custom support to researchers across the lifecycle of their research outputs. They support the open-access policies adopted by faculty at every Harvard school, advise on the orderly deposit and archiving of research outputs in the most appropriate repository, and promote standards in metadata schema and description practices to enhance discovery. Additionally, they investigate and implement new models for scholarly publishing, including services and infrastructure that leverage current repository work. They collaborate with peers to design forward-looking repository models to provide open access to scholarship.

Position Description

  • Facilitate Harvard-based deposits into DASH, including bibliographic research, metadata creation, licensing, and troubleshooting.
  • Ensure the smooth day-to-day operation of DASH, tracking and reporting technical and operational issues. 
  • Assist Faculty, faculty assistants, department admins, graduate and undergraduate students, and DASH community and collections administrators with deposit processes through trainings, office hours, one-on-one tutorials. 
  • Continuously improve repository workflow, data quality, documentation, and reporting tools, expanding the content and reach of DASH.
  • In collaboration with the SRM and Library Technology Services (LTS), identify key operational and service issues and use judgment to recommend solutions.
  • Under the direction of the SRM, conduct repository user-needs analysis, product evaluation, selection, customization, vendor relations, testing, implementation and support.
  • Collaborate on new OSRDS programs and outreach across the university, including HL’s Open Access Week activities and other initiatives. 
  • Participate in Harvard University, HL, and external committees, programs, governance, and communities of practice.
  • Serve as member of team supporting the electronic submission of dissertations and theses (ETDs), including information sessions and presentations to graduate students. 
  • Participate in other OSRDS tasks or projects as assigned.
  • May supervise student workers and interns.

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years of library or digital repository experience
  • Bachelor’s degree is required or equivalent

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience working with DSpace repository preferred.
  • Master’s degree in library science preferred.
  • Customer service orientation. 
  • Working knowledge of library metadata standards preferred. 
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, and ability to work effectively with culturally diverse users and colleagues.
  • Experience managing complex projects preferred. 
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical skills and flexible problem-solving abilities.
  • Able to work independently and as part of multiple teams; collaborative; flexible.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, belonging and antiracism (EDIBA).
  • Capacity to thrive in an environment of change.
  • General knowledge of copyright laws and fair use preferred.

  • The position will be based on our campus in Cambridge, MA. There may be the opportunity for a flexible or hybrid work model compliant with Harvard University remote work policies.
  • Work location is responsive and subject to change based on business needs.
