Position Summary

The University of Southern Indiana is accepting applications for Career Coordinator.

The Career Coordinator is responsible for administering and supporting career programs and services, building relationships with stakeholders (students, alumni, faculty, employers, and other internal and external partners), and implementing student programming initiatives in collaboration with the Career Services and Employer Engagement Coordinator. Primary services provided by the Career Coordinator include individual career coaching/advising to students and alumni of the university; identifying and promoting internship, part-time and full-time employment opportunities; and providing career-related education through workshops, classroom presentations, and instructional guides. Each Career Coordinator will be assigned to a specific College or College(s), while maintaining responsibility for a student cohort and serving as liaison to the faculty and other University stakeholders. In order to support active involvement within the larger University of Southern Indiana community, staff may also be encouraged to represent the department on regional or campus committees and advisory boards. This is a full-time, twelve-month position reporting to the Provost’s Office.

Duties/Responsibilities 

  • Perform individual career advising and coaching, especially with students in assigned College(s) on: career and values exploration, job search, career/major decision-making and goal-setting, internships and experiential opportunities, and graduate school application/admission. Provide these services to any student or alumni in the absence of other staff regardless of college affiliation. These will be primarily in person, but potentially virtual based upon the needs of the student or alumni.

  • Provide support and critiques to students and alumni with resume/cover letter writing, professional networking, and interviewing strategies, electronic communication, and professional social media profiles.

  • Remain current on job market trends and career opportunities for students and alumni of the university.

  • Schedule and document career advising sessions in internal systems.

  • Actively develop and strengthen relationships and partnerships, working closely with Department Chairs, faculty, and staff in role as office liaison to assigned College(s).

  • Assist students in establishing appropriate educational and behavioral objectives as they relate to employment. Advise and assist students with registration for USI internship courses.

  • Refer candidates to specific employers when appropriate using existing and new technology.

  • Teach relevant courses related to Career Services and Professional Development as needed.

  • Assist with development and updates to Career Services Professional Development Course online or in person

  • Work with Career Services Team to develop new and appropriate work and internship sites for USI students and alumni

  • Conduct site visits to meet with employers and learn more about their recruiting needs and what they can offer USI students or to visit with current interns. Mid-term evaluation site visits may be done for some majors.

  • Collaborate with Career Services Team to develop, implement, and assess programming efforts and events for students and alumni.

  • Serve as a department contact person for various on-campus departments, student organizations and stakeholders.

  • Assist with planning, developing, and marketing office-sponsored fairs and events.

  • Develop and deliver effective career-related workshops, seminars, and career planning/internship courses, in person and online.

  • Market Career Services programs to employers, students, and USI faculty/staff.

  • Assist with development of career/professional development-based written and web-based resources including handouts, online instructional guides, and articles for assigned College(s).

  • Assist in assessing usage and effectiveness of office programs and services through measurable data collection.

  • Refer students to and collaborate with other USI support services professionals and faculty.

  • Promote the ongoing First Destination Survey and Professional Development programs to students and Alumni together with the Career Services and Employer Engagement Coordinator.

  • Utilize additional technologies, particularly web-based technologies that benefit the overall operation of the Career Services office.

  • Document employer, and student interactions in the Career Services Management system.

  • Provide data that assists in maintaining current employer and student information in Career Services database.

  • Solicit feedback from employers and students through evaluations and communication to ensure overall effectiveness of Career Services programs. Also, consult with USI faculty and staff to assess effectiveness of programs and services.

  • Represent the University at a variety of professional functions and serve on various University committees.

  • Collaborate with other Career Services staff members as needed or as assigned. Support other employment-based activities of the Career Services and Internships office.

  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field.

  • One-year related experience; post-graduation experience desired.

  • Must possess excellent organizational and counseling skills.

  • Must possess excellent presentation, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Must possess knowledge of job-seeking and resume development techniques.

  • Must work well as part of a team and be willing to work collaboratively with designated staff

  • Knowledge of personal computers, e-mail, word processing, and database software.

  • Ability to work with diverse individuals.

  • Valid US driver’s license.


Preferred Knowledge and Skills

  • Master’s degree.

  • Experience with the Internet, and Internet based job search tools, highly preferred.


Regular Work Hours/Travel Requirements

  • Standard work hours are 8:00am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday.
  • Irregular hours as necessary for presentations or career events.
  • Occasional overnight travel required.
